SOBREPESO Y OBESIDAD DEL LACTANTE EN RELACIÓN AL TIPO DE LACTANCIA RECIBIDA

Abstract

Obesity and infant overweight is now taking epidemic proportions in many parts of the world and is increasing in countries of low and moderate income. With the objective of identify the influence that has the type of received breastfeeding, about the weight of infants under 12 months of age of the Duran Canton in the first half of 2015, a descriptive cross-sectional investigation. Percentages and rates of prevalence were calculated, we use the test of independence for the univariate analysis and logistic regression for multivariate analysis. The prevalence of overweight or obesity in infants under 12 months of age, is similar to those reported in previous research in our country. It has identified a statistically significant association between the weight and the type of feeding received, Observing that exclusive breastfeeding for 4-6 months was a protective factor in overweight and obesity, while that artificial feeding was a risk factor in comparison with the infants exclusively breastfed. It was also found statistical association between the weight and the following variables: Mother educational level, Mother occupation, Economic Income of the family, History of mother overweight, Mixed feeding: supplemental breastfeeding with formula, The addition of grain or other food to the formula, Food with those who start the weaning process, History of first-line relatives with overweight. The set of variables included in the research behave as risk factors for overweight or obesity in infants: occupation, type of feeding, adding cereal or other food and history of first-line relatives with overweight. The low-income constituted a protective factor
